The Zimbabwe Football Association Northern Region has resolved to set its own version of the FA Cup following the trend of topflight teams the world over.

The introduction of the FA Cup which will be the first by the second tier was agreed by congress at their annual general meeting.

In the AGM minutes seen by ZTN Sport, the region also talked of a number of sponsorship packages that are coming this year.

“The League will soon launch the NRSL FA Cup again, becoming the first region to do so.”

“Further sponsorship was announced as follows, goalkeeper of the month and year, player of the month and year, coach of the month and year as well as the top Scorer of the month and year.

“Sponsor for the Willard Manyengavana memorial cup now in place with modalities for the launch being worked out,” read some of the minutes.

The second tier also said they will be aligning their rules to those of the premier soccer league as a way of adequately preparing their teams for the top tier league, and they have also made some recommendations to the composition of the teams in the league.

“The League is realigning its rules and regulations with those of the PSL.

“The Congress resolved to reduce the number of teams to be relegated to Division 2 from 6 to 3 and introduced a play off for the fourth team like the EPL version.

“The Congress further resolved to reduce the number of teams in the League to 16 in the 2021 season.”

ZIFA has been clamouring for the resuscitation of the junior football structures which was long neglected by previous administrators and Northern Region said they will lead the way.

“Congress resolved to establish and manage junior football from under 13-17 in the three provinces within its jurisdiction this year. The Region’s leadership is now working on the launch date.”

They also set the date for the resumption of the 2020 Northern Region Division One soccer league.

The NRSL season will kick off on 3-5 April.
