At least 144 Zimbabweans have died of Covid-19 in the first 10 days of the year, bringing the total death toll to 507 since March 2020.

A total of 7 610 new infections have been recorded since the start of the year.

This brings to 21 477 the total number of cases recorded since the onset of the pandemic.

Harare remains the epicentre of the virus with 7 345 cases followed by Bulawayo which has recorded 4011.

Yesterday 24 people succumbed to the virus out of a total of 978 cases.

The country’s recovery rate continues to plummet as cases surge exponentially.

According to latest data from the Ministry of Health and Child Care, as at 10 January the recovery rate stood at 58 percent down from 80 percent at the beginning of the month.

Zimbabwe has put in place a number of measures to control the spread of the virus, amid fears the country’s health facilities will be overwhelmed if cases continue to rise.

Part of the measures include a Level 4 lockdown and a ban on inter-city movement of dead bodies.

On Sunday Government announced that people who die will be buried in towns or areas in which they would have died and there will be no body-viewing.

The order takes immediate effect.
