15000 Zimbabweans arrested for violating Covid-19 rules

Police in Zimbabwe have arrested close to 15 000 citizens over the last two weeks for violating Covid-19 regulations.

Some of the violations include not wearing face masks and gatherings exceeding the stipulated limit.

On Tuesday alone, 2 466 people were arrested for Covid-19 related breaches, of which 1 777 were nabbed for failing to wear face masks.

National Police Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said, “Since the first of March this year, we have arrested 14 938 people for not wearing face masks.

These people are a danger to others and to themselves. They are not prioritizing the health of others and that is why we are saying members of the public should just take heed of the message of the government and observe the World Health Organization Covid-19 protocols,” he said.

According to statistics released by the police, since 30 March last year to date, a cumulative total of 499 805 people were arrested for Covid-19 related violations.
