35 Zimbabweans killed in bus accident

Thirty-five people were killed and 71 others injured when the bus they were on veered off the road, plunging into a gorge in Zimbabwe’s Chimanimani District on Thursday night.

Police said the bus was ferrying Zion Christian Church members to an Easter gathering in Masvingo. The driver is said to have lost control of the bus resulting in the tragedy. “The (Zimbabwe Republic Police) confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 5km peg along Jopa- Skyline Road, Chimanimani last night at around 2200 hours, where a Charles Luwanga bus which had 106 ZCC church members went out of the road and fell into a gorge.

“As a result of the accident, 35 people died while 71 others were injured. The bodies of the victims were taken to Chipinge Hospital for post-mortem while the injured were referred to the same institution for treatment, with 13 being critically injured.” Chimanimani Member of Parliament Joshua Sacco said.

“Police have told us that they have so far counted 29 people who have died, and scores of others have been injured. It’s a terrible disaster.”
