A total of 46 out of 448 doctors at public hospitals in Zimbabwe who were fired for striking illegally have returned to work.

This follows a two-day moratorium issued by President Mnangagwa for the doctors to return to work without reapplying.

The 48-hour moratorium lapsed on Sunday.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa told journalists in Harare on Tuesday that the moratorium will not be extended.

She said government will continue engaging its health workers on their welfare.

ā€œDiscussions will only be held with doctors who are at work,ā€ she said.

Health and Child Care Minister Dr Obadiah Moyo added that the doctors who have returned to work will now be required to sign assumption of duty forms to regularize their return.

The doctors asked for an extension of the moratorium to allow them ample time to consult.

They also turned down an offer to be paid ZWL $5 000 monthly by Econet Wireless founder, Strive Masiyiwa and his wife, Tsitsi, through their Higher Life Foundation (HLF).

The standoff between Government and the doctors has spanned over 90 days now.

A total of 448 doctors were fired for defying a labour court ruling which ordered them to return to work, after ruling their strike action illegal.

The Zimbabwe Government subsequently asked them to re-apply for their posts.
