Over half a million Zimbabweans have been arrested for violating Covid-19 prevention regulations since March 30 last year. According to statistics released by police, a total of 602 182 people were arrested and fined during the period under review. Some of the violations include not wearing face masks and gatherings exceeding the stipulated limit.
National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi warned that police will continue pursuing bar owners and party organizers behind social gatherings that go against Covid-19 prevention regulations.
“We have realized that people are hosting braai parties at restaurants, beer halls and bars despite government making it clear that bars are not yet allowed to operate. Restaurants are not supposed to allow people to drink alcohol at their premises doing all sorts of activities. But this is what has been going on. As police, we are now effecting arrests and we are also going to name and shame bar and nightclub operators that are openly violating the Covid-19 protocols,” he said.
The police have warned operators who continue to defy Covid-19 health and safety measures and members of the public who are found drinking beers at bars, beer halls and restaurants will also be arrested by the police and made to face the due process of the law.
College students are also a target of the police as they are said to be hosting parties at homes and in open contravention of Covid-19 regulations.
