THE second edition of the Annual Science Sports and Arts Festival has kicked off in Zimbabwe’s second city Bulawayo, with students from primary and secondary schools in all provinces of Zimbabwe set to participate in sports, music and dance, as well as technical exhibitions.

The students will exhibit in areas such as metal work, ICT and Olympiads, wood and food technology.

The event started last year in Harare, and will have 250 students from each province participating. It will run under the theme: “Nurturing talent through the competence based curriculum.”

Primary and secondary education Minister, Professor Paul Mavhima, said the event is in line with the ‘fit for purpose’ based curriculum, which gives learners an opportunity to showcase their
knowledge in various disciplines.

“As a way of monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the curriculum in equipping learners with the necessary skills, knowledge, competences, values and appropriate attitudes, the ministry developed a critical component of the competence – based curriculum, the Annual Science, Sport and Arts Festival,” said the Minister.

The festival will be officially opened by President Emmerson Mnangagwa at White City stadium on Thursday.
