A truck driver yet to be identified is on the run after alert detectives intercepted a foreign registered fuel truck laden with water at Chirundu border post.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident.

“The ZRP is investigating the circumstances in which a foreign registered haulage truck was found laden with an estimated 25 000 litres of water instead of 39 754 litres of diesel while destined for Zambia. The incident occurred at Chirundu Border Post,” he said.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said the truck driver is on the run and appealed for information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect to contact any nearest police station

In June the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, intercepted three fuel tanks carrying thousands of litres of water into Zambia – a common scam in which imported fuel which is supposed to transit through Zimbabwe is offloaded in the country without paying necessary taxes.

Since this fuel is not for local consumption, no duty is paid on importation. The fuel trucks are sealed at the port of entry and the seals are removed at the exit point after the acquittal process.
