Eight armed robbers broke into the criminal registry office at the High Court in Zimbabwe’s second largest city, Bulawayo, and attempted to steal evidence, but failed.

This occurred in the early hours of Sunday.

Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told ZTN: “Yes, a report has been made to the police, but I’m yet to get full details. You can check with me in the afternoon.”

Police sources told ZTN that the robbers, armed with a pistol, injured and disarmed an officer manning the premises. They then broke into the registry office and tried to open a safe where critical documents and exhibits are stored.

“The suspects broke open the screen door to the corridor and proceeded to the criminal registry office where they opened the unlocked screen gate to the registry office and opened the door using possibly a duplicate key and gained entry into the office which is undergoing renovations.

“They also attempted to break open the registry safe where exhibits are stored but failed.”

The injured officer is being treated at Ross Camp, while it is unclear whether anything was taken from the court.
