ASHLEIGH Barty is over the moon after breaking a 36-year record by becoming the first Australian woman to reach the semi-finals of the Grand Slam at her home after beating Petra Kvitova.

“It’s been absolutely incredible,” Barty was quoted by the BBC as saying.
Wendy Turnbull in 1984 was the last.

If Barty can go on to reach the final, she will also become the first Australian women’s singles winner since Chris O’Neil in 1978.

In the quarter-finals, Barty took advantage of Petra Kvitova for missed chances in her 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 win in Melbourne.

“I knew I had to bring my best against Petra. That first set was crucial and it was good to get a quick start in the second.”

The French Open champion, Barty, will now face American Sofia Kenin.
