August 2023 General Election: What you need to know

Harmonised elections are scheduled to be held on 23 August 2023 to elect the president and members of both houses of Parliament.

These elections will determine whether there will be a newly elected President or the reinstatement of current president.

A presidential candidate needs more than 50% of the vote to be declared the winner. The presidential term lasts for 5 years. The Parliament is bicameral, consisting of the House of Assembly and Senate.

A total of eleven presidential candidates are vying for the post. These Presidential candidates include President Emmerson Mnangagwa (Zanu PF) opposition leader Nelson Chamisa (CCC), former Zanu PF, Elisabeth Valerio (UZA), Joseph Busha (Free Zim Congress), Trust Chikohora (ZCPD), Blessing Kasiyamhuru (ZIPP), Lovemore Madhuku (NCA), Wilbert Mubaiwa (NPC), Gwinyai Henry Muzorewa (UANC), and Harry Peter Wilson (DOP). MDC leader Douglas Mwonzora has withdrawn from the race even though he remains on the ZEC list.
