Minister Sanyatwe backs Warriors

Langton Nyakwenda

THE Warriors have received backing from the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Anselem Sanyatwe, ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Benin tonight.

Benin are hosting this Group C qualifier in Cote d’Ivoire because they don’t have a CAF certified stadium.

The match kicks off at 6PM.

Minister of Sport, Sanyatwe, says this game is a pivotal moment for Zimbabwe’s national football game.

“As Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and on behalf of the government and the people of Zimbabwe, I would like to extend my heartfelt best wishes to our men’s senior national football team.

“Warriors, you carry with you the hopes, dreams and spirit of an entire nation. We are rallying behind you with pride and belief,” said Sanyatwe.

Zimbabwe anchor Group C with four points.

However, coach Michael Nees thinks Zimbabwe still has a mathematical chance of qualifying for the World Cup.

Group leaders automatically qualify while the best second placed nation will be involved in playoffs.

“To our players, step onto that pitch with courage, not fear. “Play with heart, with honor and with determination that defines Zimbabwean resilience.

“Lift our flag high, let every touch, pass and goal echo the strength and unity of our great nation.

“To Coach Michael Nees and the entire technical team, your leadership and vision are vital.

“Steer the ship with clarity and conviction. Know that the nation stands firmly behind your efforts.

“Let this be the moment Zimbabwe rises, together, in pursuit of the World Cup dream,” added Sanyatwe.

‘Zim cash dependence hindering digital economy’

Tapiwanashe Mangwiro

Banking experts believe that Zimbabwe’s heavy reliance on cash, despite widespread, deep mobile penetration and modern payment infrastructure, is a hindrance to the country’s goal of a predominantly digital economy

This was said by Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe chief policy research and anti-money laundering compliance officer Mr Amon Chitsva at the ongoing inaugural ZimSwitch Digital Connect Symposium in Nyanga.

His sentiments were echoed by Mr Irvine Masona, the president of the Electronic Payment Association of Zimbabwe (EPAZ), who also provided a detailed assessment of the nation’s digital payment landscape and the hurdles slowing digital adoption.

Mr Masona noted that while countries such as China and the United Kingdom had more than 90 percent of their daily transactions conducted digitally, Zimbabwe remains heavily cash-dependent.

This is also despite mobile penetration exceeding 100 percent.

A FinScope survey indicates that 70 percent of Zimbabwe’s citizens still rely on cash for daily transactions.

“Our volumes are going in the wrong direction,” Mr Masona said.

“Customers withdraw their salaries as cash, then transact outside the digital ecosystem, limiting the potential of digital platforms.”

“Are we providing the right level of convenience cash already offered?” the EPAZ president asked.

“If someone puts US$100 into their account, can they still transact US$100, or do they lose value immediately? Unless we fix that, adoption will remain low.”

He highlighted that convenience, cost and trust are key factors driving cash use. Digital transactions can incur fees and sometimes reduce the value of deposits, while cash offers immediate, predictable access.

Mr Masona compared Zimbabwe’s adoption with global peers. In China, contactless and mobile payments dominate daily life, in the UK, 93 percent of transactions are digital, and in South Africa, 91 percent of payments are digital, prompting some retailers to phase out cash entirely.

“Globally, 70 percent of new value over the next decade will come from digitally enabled economies,” he said, citing World Economic Forum research.

“If we fail to capture that, Zimbabwe risks falling behind.”

He also urged banks and fintechs to design products that matched Zimbabwean realities rather than copying foreign templates. Mr Musona said the thriving digital economy must be built for customers, not for someone else.

Mr Chitsva told the symposium that digitalisation is central to Zimbabwe’s economic and financial stability. The Reserve Bank has incorporated digital transformation into the National Development Strategy and works with stakeholders, including ZimSwitch, to modernise the payments ecosystem.

“The digital economy is not only about adopting technology but about resilience, collaboration and innovation,” Mr Chitsva said.

He identified several barriers: uneven access to technology, limited digital literacy, cybersecurity risks, weak data protection, and ongoing cultural preference for cash.

Transaction fees were also a disincentive, according to the regulator. To unlock a bolder digital economy, he said, “it requires a shared vision, strategic alignment and unwavering commitment from all stakeholders”.

The central bank intends to provide appropriate regulation that encourages innovation while maintaining financial stability. Transaction fees, he noted, remain a major disincentive for citizens. Both speakers emphasised the need for cooperation between regulators, banks and fintechs.

Mr Masona highlighted the importance of creating digital platforms that meet citizens’ daily needs, including transport payments, airtime, pensions, and healthcare services.

“Unless we deliver real value and build trust, digital adoption will remain low,” he said.

Mr Chitsva added that achieving a bold digital economy requires shared vision, strategic alignment and unwavering commitment from all stakeholders.

The Reserve Bank plans to continue supporting infrastructure, interoperability and consumer protection.

The symposium illustrates both progress and challenges. Zimbabwe has the infrastructure, mobile reach and regulatory alignment to grow its digital economy. Yet cash dominance persists, and low adoption limits the potential for financial inclusion and innovation.

Industry experts warn that without immediate action to address fees, trust and usability, Zimbabwe risks lagging behind regional and global peers in the digital payments revolution.

Govt sets record straight on car windows tint ban

Farirai Machivenyika

Senior Reporter

THERE is currently no law banning tints on car windows, the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Ziyambi Ziyambi, said yesterday.

Responding to questions from legislators during the National Assembly’s question time, Minister Ziyambi said any such ban would need Parliament to change the law.

This follows an announcement of a ban on tints on car windows by Permanent Secretary for Presidential Affairs and Devolution Mr Tafadzwa Muguti on Tuesday.

Mr Muguti said the ban covered both private and public transport vehicles, with exemptions only for official Government VIP vehicles and factory-standard tints.

He said the ban was intended to curb crime involving vehicles with tinted windows, citing the recent rape of a Grade Seven girl in a minibus at Julia Zvobgo Street bus terminus in central Harare.

Minister Ziyambi, however, set the record straight yesterday, saying Parliament would have to be involved if such a law was to be enacted.

“At the moment, we don’t have any law banning tinted windows on vehicles. If we are to have such a law, it would involve consultations between my ministry and that of Home Affairs and we would also have to bring it to Parliament,” he said.

Responding to a question on what the Government would do to compensate motorists who were fined for driving vehicles with tinted windows from the time Mr Muguti made the pronouncement, Minister Ziyambi said they were free to seek recourse at the courts.

“You have to be charged for breaking a particular law and I wouldn’t know how those motorists were charged on a law that is not there. Our police are professional and I don’t think they would do that,” he said.

“However, the admission of guilt ticket issued by the police is a court document and if there are motorists who have been issued such tickets, they are free to approach the courts for redress.”

Minister Ziyambi also informed the House how Government policy positions on various issues were made public.

“Government’s policy pronouncements are made through the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, (Dr Jenfan Muswere) and his Permanent Secretary (Mr Nick Mangwana) or the Presidential spokesperson (Deputy Chief Secretary Mr George Charamba),” he said.

Minister Ziyambi said Government ministries were empowered to make public pronouncements on issues related to their portfolios.

“As for me, I can only speak on Government policies when I am in this House (as Leader of Government Business in the House) but can’t do it when I am outside,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister Ziyambi said the Government would soon launch an agency to deal with the drugs and substance abuse menace.

“This agency will be responsible for curbing the drug and substance abuse menace and also the rehabilitation of addicts. It will be a multi-stakeholder agency,” he said.

Minister Ziyambi said Cabinet had since approved the establishment of the agency following recommendations from the Ministerial Committee on drugs and substance abuse chaired by Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri.

Sikandar Raza Hits No. 1 in ICC ODI All-Rounder Rankings

ZIMBABWE cricket star Sikandar Raza has reached the summit of world cricket. At 39, he has been confirmed as the No. 1 ODI all-rounder by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The veteran all-rounder climbed to the top after a superb series against Sri Lanka in Harare. Zimbabwe lost the two matches, but Raza stood tall with scores of 92 and an unbeaten 59, plus a wicket with the ball. Those efforts lifted his ICC all-rounder rating to 302 points, ahead of Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai (296) and Mohammad Nabi (292).

The ICC marked the milestone with a statement: “Sikandar Raza becomes No. 1 ODI all-rounder for the first time in his career.” The achievement was quickly picked up by major outlets, with the Times of India calling it proof that “age is just a number.”

Raza’s rise to the top is a rare feat in world cricket. Few players peak so late in their careers, but his consistency and hunger have kept him among the game’s elite. For Zimbabwe, his success is a bright spark even in defeat, showing the world that one of their own is still competing with the very best.

Bindura headmaster ordered to perform 245 hours of community service for embezzling US$792 in exam fees

Freeman Razemba

Senior Reporter

A 35-year-old headmaster from Bindura will perform 245 hours of community service after he stole US$792 meant for the 2025 Grade Seven examination fees for 12 pupils.

Kudakwashe Tivarige (35) was the headmaster at Sunrise Group of Schools in Maravanyika Village, Chief Masembura, Bindura.

He was arrested for theft of trust property after he diverted US$792 for exam fees paid by the 12 pupils between February 2024 and January 2025 through the school’s accounts office.

The school directors instructed him to register the pupils at Dengu Primary, as Sunrise Group of Schools is not an examination centre.

Instead, he pocketed the money, falsely claiming the pupils had been registered to write the examinations at Maravanyika Primary School.

The fraud was exposed when school director Ms Martha Masiachengo verified with ZIMSEC and discovered the pupils had not been registered.

A police report was made at ZRP Manhenga, leading to Tivarige’s arrest. Nothing was recovered.

He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with three months suspended on condition of good behaviour and a further three months suspended if he restitutes the US$792.

The remaining six months were converted to 245 hours of community service at Manhenga Clinic.
