A Harare man, Bigboy Mujenda ran out of luck on Thursday when he was arrested for impersonation and extortion after harassing police officers at a security check point in Mazowe.
He was arrested with four other serving members of the police force all from different Harare police stations.
In a police memorandum dated 16 September 2020 seen by this reporter, Sergeant William of Mabvuku, Constable Mupingo, from Ruwa, Constables Ruvuke and Mzilikazi from Mabelreign, together with fake detective Bigboy Mujenda connived to commit crimes of extortion while pretending to be members of the police internal investigations department.
Circumstances surrounding the matter are that on the 16th of September 2020 at around 1700hrs, the team were travelling in an unregistered white Chevrolet with no number plates. They arrived at Mvurwi roadblock where they misrepresented themselves as internal investigations officers.
It is alleged that a kombi carrying passengers passed by and the team pursued it, assaulted the driver alleging that he had failed to stop at the roadblock. They extorted US$60 from him.
They also arrived at a roadblock in Mazowe and used the same modus operandi, harassing police officers on duty. The officers succumbed to fear. Suddenly the kombi whose occupants were extorted of US$60 arrived
and positively identified them as the team that had previously extorted them.
The Mazoe police officers arrested the team and took them to Mazowe police station where they were charged with forgery, assault and bribery among other charges, and detained.
Contacted for comment, police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said he was yet to receive the reports from Mazowe.
