Zimbabwe school teachers down their chalks

One of Zimbabwe’s biggest teacher representative groups says its members will not report for work when the first school term begins tomorrow.

In a Tweet this afternoon the Zimbabwe Teachers Union said: “This is indeed sad, to imagine that in this 20th Century, Zim Teachers are incapacitated and cannot turn up for duty, on 14 January 2020.  SAD that, the Teacher who should uphold the quality of education is incapacitated.”

Last week the Zimbabwean government offered its workers a 97 % salary increment but this was immediately shot down by the Apex Council, which represents civil servants.

The Apex Council is pushing for an equivalent of USD $475 for the least paid government employee.

Government says it is not in a position to meet such a demand.
