Chamisa pins hopes on Mbeki

Zimbabwean opposition MDC leader, advocate Nelson Chamisa is hopeful the impasse between him and President Mnangagwa will thaw following the visit to the country by former South African President Thabo Mbeki.

Chamisa told ZTN on Tuesday that his Interaction with the former South African President on Monday was the first step for Zimbabwe’s political leaders to find each other.

President Mbeki met Chamisa on Monday night at a Harare hotel.

Earlier, the former South African leader had met President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House. 

“I have already indicated that the best way forward is to have genuine political discourse and look at the future, where we are able to correct the mistakes of the past, errors of yesterday and omissions gone by so that we are able to firmly place our country on a path to restoration, prosperity and good life, happiness and justice for all,” Chamisa said. 

After meeting Zimbabwe’s two main political actors, President Mbeki held a closed door meeting on Tuesday with leaders under the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD).

These included MDC-T leader Dr Thokozani Khupe, her deputy Obert Gutu, National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) president Professor Lovemore Madhuku, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Lucia Matibenga and Matabeleland South propotional representation member Priscilla Misihairabwi.

Dr Khupe said after the meeting, “Our discussion was around how to move this country forward and we realise that we can only move this forward by uniting as Zimbabweans”.

President Mbeki is also expected to meet church leaders and other stakeholders before he leaves the country.
