ZIMBABWE Government workers have accepted a proposal by their employer to raise salaries by 70 percent.

The workers however say the acceptance is only provisional, as talks with their employer continue.

Workers’ unions under the Apex council met on Tuesday to deliberate on the latest salary offer which will see the lowest paid civil servant earning ZWL$1023 up from ZWL$582.

Speaking to ZTN news, Apex Council Secretary David Dzatsunga said, “We have provisionally consented to Government’s offer on the premise that the proposed salary increase will cushion civil servants.

“People are quite desperate and we decided it was better to agree to what government was proposing as we continue to negotiate.”

Government workers have resolved to continue pushing their initial demand despite accepting the offer.

Civil servants are pushing for a minimum wage of ZWL$4 000.

“We however continue to negotiate with Government and would like to make it clear that our substantive demand still stands. We want Government to restore our salaries to US dollar values and give us the matching interbank rate equivalent,” said Dzatsunga.

On Monday, doctors and teachers rejected the offer made by Government.

Government says it remains open to further talks with its employees.
