PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has congratulated Boris Johnson on his elevation to the post of Conservative leader and new UK Prime Minister.

The Zimbabwean leader said he looked forward to closer ties between the Southern African country and its former colonial master.

Social networking platform Twitter is awash with congratulatory messages for Mr. Johnson, who won the contest to lead Britain’s governing Conservative Party on Tuesday.

Zimbabwe has been on a re-engagement path with the international community, following years of isolation during former President Robert Mugabe’s rule.

Outgoing British Premier Theresa May also tweeted her congratulations.

In her message, May stressed two key issues for the ruling Conservatives, “… to work together to deliver a Brexit that works for the whole UK and to keep Jeremy Corbyn out of government.”

Meanwhile, United States President Donald Trump has sent in his message of congratulations to Mr. Johnson saying, “He will be great!”

His tweet has gained a lot of mixed reactions as most Twitter users have been in the habit of comparing the two leaders in comic fashion, from the way they look to their political ideologies and beliefs.
