Coronavirus: Zimbabwe law makers scurry for cover

Zimbabwe’s Parliament, today (Wednesday) became the first public institution in the country to suspend business citing the Coronavirus which has caused havoc around the globe.

Both houses adjourned until May 5 this year.

On Tuesday, the southern African country’s leader, President Emmerson Mnangagwa suspended gatherings of more than 100 people, including weddings and churches, for two months.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda and acting Senate President Chief Fortune Charumbira announced the development in both houses.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has since declared COVID-19 a pandemic.

Globally, the virus has infected 184,976 people and killed just over 7,500.

In neighbouring South Africa, 116 people have been infected with the virus to date, while two others tested positive in Zambia today (Wednesday).

Although in Zimbabwe, no case has tested positive, a national disaster was declared by the president, to allow the country to mobilise resources.
