Finance Minister of Germany’s Hesse state, Thomas Schaefer, has died by suicide after becoming “deeply worried” about the economic impact of Coronavirus.
Schaefer (54) is said to have been working “day and night” to help businesses deal with the impact.
His body was found on Saturday.
“We are in shock. We are in disbelief and above all, we are immensely sad,” state premier Volker Bouffier said on Sunday.
“Today, we have to assume that he was deeply worried. It’s precisely during this difficult time that we would have needed someone like him.”
