Zimbabweans who get vaccinated for Covid-19 will soon have their details linked to passports and national identity cards.

Harare City Council Director of Health Services Dr Prosper Chonzi told ZTN on Thursday that proof of vaccination may be a prerequisite for individuals intending to travel outside the country.

Dr Chonzi said: ā€œAs you get your second dose of the vaccination, you will get a bar-coded certificate which will be linked to your national ID and passport.

ā€œAs you know, it might then be a requirement in other countries for you to have a valid vaccination certificate.ā€

As at Wednesday, 49 404 people had been vaccinated in Zimbabwe.

The country rolled out Stage Two of the vaccination programme targeting the clergy, teachers, the Judiciary, security services, people with chronic conditions and the elderly above 60 years of age.

Finance Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube said the vaccination programme is expected to gather pace after the launch of Stage Two.

He said, ā€œI think after the launch of the second phase by His Excellency in Victoria Falls yesterday, we will see a pickup in pace with the vaccinations.ā€

On Thursday, church leaders started receiving doses of the vaccine.

The Archbishop of Harare diocese, Robert Ndlovu, led a group of Catholics in getting vaccinated.

ā€œIā€™m not a scientist, but I think this is the best way to protect yourself and others. I encourage everyone to get vaccinated,ā€ Archbishop Ndlovu told ZTN after receiving his jab.
