Hawks take over investigations in R2 million drug bust case

There is growing cross border drug trafficking at the Zimbabwe – South Africa border, the Beitbridge Border Post.  South Africa’s specialised crime unit, the Hawks have taken over investigations in a case involving a 38-year old Zimbabwean woman arrested at Beitbridge for drug smuggling.

South African Police Service arrested Busisiwe Mavis Thundedzwa for allegedly smuggling drugs worth R2 million into that country, in one of the largest ever drug hauls of methamphetamine drug on May 11. Meth is a drug which can be smoked, snorted or injected by users.  

The police intercepted the illicit drug stashed in the woman’s luggage. She was arrested on the South African side during routine border patrols by police while travelling from Zimbabwe to the neighbouring country.

The Hawks are South Africa’s specialized Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations which target organised crime.

Hawks spokesperson for Limpopo, Captain Matimba Maluleke said the suspect appeared before the Musina Magistrates Court on Friday where she was remanded in custody to June 26.
