Zimbabwe’s president Emmerson Mnangagwa says his government will explore means to ensure school fees remains affordable to the majority.

This comes as many schools in the Southern African county are proposing to hike fees by up to 400 percent ahead of the start of the new school term.

At a national clean-up in Harare earlier today the Zimbabwean leader said he will look into the matter.

“I have heard your concerns on the price of meat and school fees. Regarding the price of meat, there is not much that we can do, but on school fees, will look into matter,” he said

The first term of school opens in two weeks’ time.

A survey conducted by ZTN showed that some of the proposed fees are ranging between 4 500 and 12 500 Zimbabwe dollars for boarding schools.

Day school are proposing fees of between $650 and $2 500.

Most parents whose earnings have been eroded by the high cost of living, feel the proposed fees increases are beyond their reach.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has said parents can seek recourse from the Government over exorbitant school fees.
