FC Platinum needed a penalty shootout victory to progress to the quarter finals of the Chibuku Super Cup at the expense of provincial rivals Chapungu.

The match had ended in a goalless stalemate after regulation time but the miners prevailed 4-3 in the shootout.

Chapungu and FC Platinum have met at the first hurdle of this competition in three previous seasons, and Chapungu prevailed in 2017 and 2018.

FC Platinum coach Lizwe Sweswe expressed delight at the final whistle.

“In cup matches the important thing is progression and I am happy we have managed that, matches are coming thick and fast but we are coping.

“We have not yet lost but we have been failing to score regularly and we need to improve on that aspect,” said Sweswe.

Sweswe is yet to lose a game since taking charge at Mandava, and has so far played six matches as the head coach.
