Former African Champ Headed For Tanzania

FORMER WBF All-Africa Heavyweight champion Elvis Moyo will fight at the six series show set for Tanzania to prepare for potential UK, USA fights.

Speaking to ZTN from his base in South Africa on Thursday, Moyo, popularly known as ‘The Bulawayo Bomber’, said he was working on sponsorship to ensure he fights in eight weeks time.

Moyo will be one of a couple of Zimbabwean boxers that will benefit from the fights dubbed ‘Rumble in Dar’ starting end of this month.

“I’m already training and I may fight there in Tanzania in March,” Moyo said.

“But I’m told for someone of my level, I must organise my own sponsorship.

“Remember I signed with Global Stars and the idea is to get me two, three fights here, and send me to UK or America.”

The boxer is one of many frustrated by the lockdown since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

Both South Africa and Zimbabwe have been affected, making it impossible for the sport to make a successful return in the short-term.

Tanzania on the other hand has been different.

“They are looking for a couple of boxers to put into their bill… Remember Tanzania are one of the countries that never entertained Covid-19, they never closed their borders, they never had a lockdown despite having a population of more than 56 million,” said Moyo.

“So everyone is going there and boxing tournaments are being held… There are no restrictions and there are crowds.”
Part of Moyo’s sponsorship will include air tickets to the East African country, training space for him and his opponent while the hosts will provide accommodation for him during his stay.

Moyo said despite such a challenge, he understands they have given him a real opportunity.

“They are trying to push me and that means for that I need about R40 000 to R50 000.
“That means I really do not need to pay myself much. I simply need to and get a fight and come back,” Moyo said.

The boxer said he could end up paying himself R15 000 or less as the bigger picture was getting to fight.

Meanwhile, Female boxer Revai Madondo will be the first Zimbabwean to feature in the six series show.

Organiser, Jeremy Bean, who brought Friday Night series to Harare two years back, wants to give boxers a chance to make a return amid the Covid-19 crisis.
