Govt endorses Great Zimbabwe development project

Government has endorsed the development projects that are taking place at the Great Zimbabwe which are being done by AFD group, UNOPS, UNESCO, world heritage site and National Museums of Zimbabwe.

Speaking at a workshop organised for journalist, Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution in Masvingo, Jefta Sakupwanya said: “Tourism, is one of the fastest growing industries in the world, in terms of global exports the sector ranks fourth after energy, fuels and food.

“It accounts for 5% of the global GDP and 6 to 7% OF global GDP employment,” said Sakupwanya.

He also added that, for people of Masvingo, tourism has emerged as a major driver of the economy.

“Great Zimbabwe World Heritage Site was undoubtedly one of the world’s key centres of civilization, in this regard Great Zimbabwe, which was nominated to the World Heritage list in 1986, plays an important role as a cultural tourism centre in the province, the nation and the world at large.

“We welcome the project’s decision to not only focus on the development of the Great Zimbabwe World Heritage Site but to also consider cascading the tourism benefits to the local communities around Great Zimbabwe,” said Sakupwanya.

Also speaking during the same workshop, project manager for the Great Zimbabwe Development Project, Salisiyo Zvawada said the project seeks to enhance the attractiveness of the site.

He said the feasibility study that was commissioned last year, which came out that there is need to improve certain aspects.

“The project will essentially look at the documentation and conversations and enhance the tourism aspect of the project by promoting and also ensuring marketing of Great Zimbabwe,’’ said Zvawada.

United Nations Office for Project Services country manager Nawal Aminath said it is an an exciting moment for the Great Zimbabwe Development Project.

“As we enter the second phase of a three year programme following a successful launch event in June 2022, programme activities have taken shape and project partners are working closely to lay the foundations for term development.

“AS UNOPS we aim to provide visibility for the Great Zimbabwe Heritage Site at a domestic, regional and international level.

‘’We aim to share insights into the structure, approaches and rationale behind the development project.”
