Gweru expects more floods…. Council moves to evacuate residents

Gweru, Zimbabwe’s third largest city, is expected to experience more floods as incessant rains continue to pound.
Some of the areas likely to be affected are Mkoba 4, Tinshell, Woodlands, Nashville and Ascot Extention.
In a notice to residents, acting Town Clerk Douglas Chikwekwe said, “We encourage affected residents to evacuate to safety.”
Council has since set up 11 evacuation centres to accommodate the affected residents.
The centres are Senga Training Centre, Mpumelelo, Takwirira, Budiriro and Matongi Primary Schools, Mtapa Hall, Shumba Hall, Mkoba Hall, Imgwe Hall, Ascot and Senga Beer Halls.
In the past few days, most low-lying areas in the city have experienced floods with residents reporting damaged property and loss of food reserves.
The flash floods come as residents are still trying to come to terms with an accident in which a double cab vehicle with six occupants was swept away at the Gweru River bridge as the driver attempted to cross the flooded river.
