President Emmerson Mnangagwa says Harare and Beijing are both happy with how relations between the two countries are deepening.

Emerging from a closed door meeting with the visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Harare this morning the Zimbabwean leader said the relations are on a “solid foundation.”

“I was very happy that l had occasion to go over our relations between China and Zimbabwe on all issues and he goes back home satisfied that our relations are on a solid foundation and what remains is further consolidation and deepening of those relations both political and economic,” said President Mnangagwa.

Wang Yi arrived in Harare on Saturday and immediately added his voice to growing calls for sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe to be lifted.

“The unilateral sanctions imposed by some countries and organisations on Zimbabwe have no basis in international law and they violate the legitimate development rights of Zimbabwe.

“China fully supports the just aspirations of Zimbabwe and African countries to quickly remove those sanctions on Zimbabwe,” the Chinese Foreign Minister told a press conference.
