Harare City Council in land survey storm

THE Mayor of Zimbabwe’s capital Harare, Councillor Herbert Gomba, has expressed disappointment with the council’s land survey department, following the sale of a piece of road by the city to a Chinese company.

The strip of road is off Edmonds street in Belvedere and opposite the Harare Showgrounds.

Residents and users of the road last Thursday woke up to find it fenced off after the land surrounding the strip had been sold to a Chinese buyer.

This immediately torched a public outcry with fuming residents asking why council had sold the road which is a thoroughfare into Samora Machel Avenue.

The Mayor said the deed to the piece of land was done in 1940 and no road appeared on the map of the area at that time but later the city council constructed a road on the property.

He said council is engaging the purchaser to let council re-survey the land and ensure the road is re-opened to the public.
