Injured Harare robber ‘summons magistrate’.

A Harare magistrates court held proceedings outside the courtroom today (Friday) after a badly injured suspected armed robber failed to walk into the courtroom.

53-year-old Shoniwa Sarezi from Mufakose, is said to have been severely beaten up by worshippers at a shrine in Harare after he allegedly attempted to steal a vehicle belonging to one of the congregants.

Prosecutor Sebastian Mutizirwa told the court that on the 15th of October at around ten to one am at corner Harare Drive and Kirkman Road in Mabelreign, Harare. Sarezi approached Simon Munyukwi who was praying at a shrine and demanded his car keys. Munyukwi resisted but Sarezi, who was armed with a machete allegedly threatened to cut off his head, before he used violence and ordered the complainant and his mate to lie on the ground.

The accused demanded the car keys of a Mercedes Benz registration number ACZ 2098 and also the vehicle car keys to a Toyota Corolla, registration number ACP 2423 which were parked besides the road.

The accused person was given the car keys of the Mercedes Benz by the complainant and on his way to the vehicle the complainant attacked the accused with a brick on his mouth. The accused fell on the ground and other worshippers at the shrine came to his rescue, recovered the vehicle keys and helped apprehend Sarezi before handing him over to the police.

Harare Magistrate Judith Taruvinga remanded the accused in custody to October 30.
