A Harare family lost cash, a vehicle, laptops and blankets with an estimated value of 10 000 United States dollars to criminals disguised as detectives from the police Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tendai Mwanza confirmed the incident to ZTN and warned members to request identification from anyone claiming to be members of the police.

“We would like to appeal to members of the public to be alert to such criminal acts. Please do not open gate or door to anyone unless you’re quite sure you know the person looking for you. Anyone claiming to be police officers on investigations should produce identification cards or should prove from which police station they are coming from.”

According to police, the bogus detectives arrived at the family’s Zimre Park home on Sunday, with one of the criminals in handcuffs pretending to be a suspect under arrest. The bogus detectives indicated that they wanted to conduct a search in the house where they alleged their supposed suspect had hidden some stolen goods.

The family obliged and granted the bogus detectives access to the house who went on to carry out their mission.

“Whilst in the house the four accused started searching the house under the guidance of the complainant. They managed to get away with cash, laptops, cell phones, blankets and various clothes. As if it was not enough, they went on to demand the keys to the complainant’s car which they used as a gate away vehicle. In the melee, the complainant lost property valued at USD10 000 and nothing recovered,” said Inspector Mwanza.

“Criminals have become so daring and people should not be victims. It’s advisable to keep the number of your local police station in your phone.”
