Ngezi Platinum’sTakunda Benhura, the recipient of the Golden Boot award in
the 2023 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, says being an underdog
throughout the season took pressure off him.
He says this made him secure his first major individual honour in his inaugural
year in the top flight domestic football league. Benhura clinched the prize with
13 goals, edging past his closest contender, Obriel Chirinda of Bulawayo Chiefs,
by one goal.
Despite not scoring in the last game of the season, a 0-1 loss to Highlanders at
Barbourfields, the 22-year-old was ecstatic, especially as he received a winner's
medal for his team's league title victory with the platinum miners.
Benhura reflected on the satisfaction of winning the Golden Boot,
acknowledging the intense competition that constantly challenges those
leading the race. He credited the senior players for their support during
challenging times and recognized the invaluable guidance of the coaches,
particularly in improving his finishing skills.
He highlighted the significant impact of Coach Takesure Chiragwi on his career,
describing him as a mentor both on and off the field. Chiragwi not only
contributes to their athletic development but also acts as a parental figure,
offering guidance and support to the players, emphasizing the importance of
staying focused and steering clear of negative influences like substance abuse.
