HERENTALS football club has been demoted to the unfashionable second-tier league after they were found guilty of match manipulation by the premier soccer league disciplinary committee.

The landmark ruling sees Gweru based Air Force of Zimbabwe side – Chapungu – flying back to the topflight league.

The students were found guilty of match manipulation in their league match against Black Rhinos on October 19 last year.

League authorities announced the verdict on Wednesday afternoon.

“Herentals FC were Fined RTGS$300 000. In addition, in line with Article 18(2) of the FIFA disciplinary code 2019, the results of the Herentals FC vs Black Rhinos match played on the 19th of October 2019 be and is hereby forfeited,” reads part of the statement.

Herentals and Black Rhinos officials who were part of a match-fixing syndicate have also been charged.

However, the ruling means Herentals will now be docked three points, they finished the season with 41 points and they will now be on 38 points.

Hitherto relegated Chapungu had the highest tally of the relegated teams, they are on 40 points together with TelOne.

But the Air Force side boast of a superior foal difference meaning Chapungu return to the top tier league.
