Hit and run driver fined

A 57-year-old man from Harare who knocked off a 7-year-old pedestrian and fled has been fined.

Herbert Chakanyuka knocked down the girl at the intersection of Harare drive and Borrowdale Road and fled.

Chakanyuka was found guilty of two counts of negligence and failure to stop after an accident.

He pleaded guilty and was fined ZWL$5 000 and ZWL$10 000 Zimbabwe dollars for the two counts respectively.

Chakanyuka committed the offence on 28 March at around 17.20pm when he was driving a Nissan Hardbody along Borrowdale road due South and turning into Harare Drive.

Whilst at the traffic light controlled intersection, the accused person hit the pedestrian who was standing at the intersection.

He did not render assistance to the injured child. The child sustained some injuries and was ferried to Parirenyatwa Hospital.

Video footage of the accident was captured on cctv, and went viral on social media.

Police used the footage to track and arrest Chakanyuka.
