Hope for Harare water situation

ZIMBABWE’S capital Harare’s water woes are set to ease amid indications council is sourcing funds to install a mobile water treatment system that will draw water from Darwendale Dam, 63 kilometres from the city.
The system is a packaged ready-to- install water treatment plant that is movable.
Harare mayor, Herbert Gomba, told ZTN that if the plan goes through, it will decongest pressure on the city’s primary water source, Lake Chivero.
“We have directed as council that the officials run around and look for funding. “I’ll soon be knocking on the door of the Ministry of Water to get water rights to use Darwendale Dam onto which the facility will be erected from,” Gomba said.
The development will be a relief for Harare residents who are enduring dry taps and some suburbs such as Mabvuku have gone for more than a decade without running water.
Sources told ZTN that the smallest mobile modular treatment plant that can service Harare can be procured from South Africa at a cost of R14 million.
