South Africa’s former President, Thabo Mbeki, says his visit to Zimbabwe this week was private and that he met opposition leaders following their requests.

President Mbeki arrived in Zimbabwe on Monday, meeting President Emmerson Mnangagwa and opposition leaders separately.

He interfaced with MDC’s Nelson Chamisa, Lovemore Madhuku (National Constitutional Assembly), Thokozani Khupe (MDC-T) and Lucia Matibenga (People’s Democratic Party), among others.

He told journalists on Wednesday: “This is a private visit. I came here to see the President because I hadn’t seen him here since he became President.

“As you know, I know many people in Zimbabwe. I have many friends here, so lots of people wanted to see me. So, we are talking to everybody.”

He went on, “We have been listening to everybody. We haven’t finalised that listening so we’ll come back later this month to finalise (that)”
