Power struggles in Zimbabwe’s opposition MDC party took a turn on Saturday after Dr Thokozani Khupe’s faction announced that its candidates in impending council and parliamentary by-elections will contest under the MDC Alliance.

In early 2020, the Supreme Court declared Dr Khupe legitimate party leader, and this left Advocate Nelson Chamisa to lead a faction going by the name MDC Alliance.

The alliance was formed by different political parties that wanted to contest in the 2018 general election “as a united front”.

At the MDC’s 21st anniversary in the capital, Harare, on Saturday, Chairperson of Dr Khupe’s faction Morgen Komichi said “from today, we are the MDC Alliance”.

He told supporters: “The Alliance agreement is very clear that its leader is from the MDC and that person is Thokozani Khupe. That’s the name we will use in the upcoming by-elections.”

The Chamisa-led faction immediately took to micro-blogging site Twitter.

“We are the MDC Alliance. We contested the 2018 election as the MDC Alliance under the presidency of Nelson Chamisa.

“Our members were unlawfully recalled on account of being members of the MDC Alliance. This battle will be settled politically.”
