Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume may spend Christmas behind bars after Harare Magistrate Ngoni Nduna turned down his bail application and remanded him to 21 January.
Mafume is facing bribery charges after he allegedly tried to grease the palms of a potential key State witness in his forthcoming corruption trial.
The Harare mayor arrested on Tuesday, barely six days after being granted ZWL$30 000 bail by the High Court in the corruption case.
His bail conditions included not interfering with State witnesses.
In denying Mafume bail on Thursday morning Magistrate Nduna said: “There was a condition for him not to interfere (with a witness). He has already interfered. This cannot be cured by any other condition but to send him to jail. Bail is denied.”
Meanwhile, Mafume’s lawyer Tonderai Bhatasara told ZTN that they will be appealing the ruling.
