MDC Alliance activist Makomborero Haruzivishe has been sentenced to an effective 14 months in prison for inciting public violence and resisting arrest.
Harare Magistrate Judith Taruvinga sentenced Haruzivishe to 24 months on the first count and 12 months on the second. 10 months were suspended from the first count and 6 months on the second count.
The legal team representing MDC Alliance activist Makomborero Haruzivishe says it will appeal their client’s conviction and sentence. The two sentences will however run concurrently, with Haruzivishe set to serve an effective 14 months in prison.
Haruzivishe’s lawyer Kossam Ncube from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights said they will contest the outcome of the case.
“We are definitely appealing the decision of the court since we are not happy that the court arrived at the verdict to convict our client. We feel that the evidence led at the trial could not by any stretch of the imagination support a conviction. It was a grave misdirection on the part of the court to have convicted him and the decision was bad at law and we are definitely going to be challenging it”, he said.
