The Grain Millers’ Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has welcomed Government’s decision to reinstate subsidies on 10 kg bags of straight run mealie meal, commonly known as roller meal in Zimbabwe.
This has resulted in a drop in the price of the product from ZWL$101,66 to ZWL$50.
The price of roller meal had almost doubled after the government of Zimbabwe removed subsidies, leaving prices of the staple at the mercy of market forces.
But the subsidies will keep in check the prices of the commodity.
Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe Chairman Tafadzwa Musarara said they are working on modalities of how to effectively apply the subsidies to cushion consumers.
“We have concluded and agreed with the ministry on the application of subsidies of 10kg Roller Meal packs. All modalities are in place to make sure the subsidies are accounted to benefit the consumer,’’ he said.
Government has provided 40 000 tonnes of maize for the purpose of producing 32 000 tonnes of mealie meal.
GMAZ started with production of 10kg packs but will move on to 5kgs and 20kgs in the coming days.
