Speaker of the National Assembly, advocate Jacob Mudenda says the decline in Parliament’s budgetary support from treasury will hinder its oversight role.
Advocate Mudenda was addressing delegates at the post budget seminar on Monday.
In the 2021 national budget, Finance Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube allocated parliament an equivalent of US$89 million down from US$124 million in 2020.
“It is my disturbing observation that this will potentially cripple the oversight role of Parliament,” said Mudenda.
“Let me emphasize that Parliament is one of the three arms of the state and must therefore be treated differently from all other Government departments in particular, in terms of allocation of financial resources,” he added.
