Zimbabwe international defender has showered praises on veteran coach Sunday “Mhofu” Chidzambwa who announced his retirement from active coaching on Wednesday.

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to show and expose myself. Thank you for all the wonderful memories in winning cups and playing among the best in the world. Enjoy retirement Boss Mhofu,” tweeted the giant defender.

Chidzambwa, arguably Zimbabwe’s most successful coach, reckons it’s about time he passes on the button to the next generation.

“I can say my days as a coach are over. I’m turning 68 this year, so sitting on the bench won’t be good for me, but I can have an advisory role to help other coaches,” Chidzambwa told Star FM.

“Everything has to come to an end, even people can die. I played my part, if someone is not convinced, then that is his opinion, and if he respects it, that’s his opinion too.

“My time is up, I need to give others a chance, the young coaches who have modern ideas,” he concluded.

Chidzambwa was the first coach to lead Zimbabwe to the Africa Cup of Nations in 2004.

He took the Warriors back to the continental showpiece in Egypt last year but resigned soon after a disastrous campaign.

Chidzambwa remains the only coach to lead a Zimbabwean club into a CAF Champions League final having achieved the feat with Dynamos of Harare in 1998.
