A 35-year-old man from Murewa district who was on the run after allegedly killing his elderly mother and uncle in cold blood last week, has been arrested.

Denford Nyamandawe, the prime suspect in the double murder, was arrested at a security checkpoint in Seke communal lands.

He had allegedly fled to Seke where he was now employed as a domestic worker.

Nyamandawe allegedly killed his mother, Angella Bhunu aged 89, and her 87-year-old brother Felix Taonana Chiodza, after accusing the two of practising witchcraft.

Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza confirmed
Nyamandawe’s arrest.

“Police picked information to the effect that the suspect was hiding somewhere in Mutsvairo village under Chief Seke where he sought some work as a domestic worker and was arrested at a police roadblock as he attempted to flee from police officers who were tracking him,” said Inspector Mwanza.

Denford Nyamandawe allegedly used a hoe and axe to kill Bhunu and Chiodza.

Detectives who attended the murder scene discovered a small axe with a blood-stained handle next to Bhunu’s body and a blood-stained hoe handle, a hoe blade and a cooking stick close to Chiodza’s body.

Bhunu’s corpse was discovered by her daughter-in-law, Evermore Nechiridza, who had gone to her home to give her food.

Another villager, Noah Madise, discovered Chiodza’s body when he visited his home intending to inform him of Bhunu’s death.

Nyamandawe is in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon.
