Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, is introducing penalties for litterbugs, with fines of up to ZWL$700 lined up.

Harare City Council spokesperson Michael Chideme told ZTN News that the anti-litter campaign will be rolled out from February 24.

Individuals caught littering will be fined ZWL$100 while businesses with dirty premises will pay ZWL$700.

Mr Chideme said council is collaborating with the Environmental Management Agency and police on the campaign.

“The operation will be sustained, starting from Monday; and council is working with the Environmental Management Agency and the Zimbabwe Republic Police to fine all litterbugs.

“Anyone found disposing litter where they are not supposed to will be ticketed.”
