MDC Alliance’s Jacob Mafume has been elected mayor of Zimbabwe’s Capital Harare.

He replaces Herbert Gomba, who was recalled from council last month.

Mafume garnered 19 votes against Luckson Mukunguma’s 14.

There was one spoiled ballot.

After the election, Mafume said, “We all have to work in concert like an orchestra. Work in concert to deliver service to the people.

“At the very least, let us try to put the residents at the centre of our efforts”.

Mafume comes into office when Harare is saddled with a number of service delivery challenges.

The City fathers have come under the spotlight for failing to supply residents with clean portable water, failing to collect revenue, illegal settlement and corruption among others.

Mafume’s predecessor is facing corruption charges, after being involved in alleged dubious land deals while he was in office.
