Latest studies by the World Health Organisation have proven that obesity limits survival chances for people infected with Covid-19.

Now with an increase in incidences of obesity in Zimbabwe especially among urban populations, containing the pandemic can be a challenge.

While addressing the third stage food systems pre-summit earlier today (Wednesday), Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Settlement Minister, Dr Anxious Masuka called on citizens to eat healthy foods to reduce incidents of obesity.

“The country is facing an increase in incidences of overweight and obesity and the associated dietetic diseases, particularly among urban populations,” said Dr Masuka.

“There is a need to promote healthy eating and dietary diversification to incorporate nutrient–dense food sources,” he said.

Research has proven that traditional food sources and food processing methods such as fermenting are actually much healthier.

“After age, obesity has been shown to be the second most important predictor of Covid-19 mortality.

“Young people now shun traditional foods. These healthy foods should be publicized and promoted,” Dr Masuka said.
