MARVELOUS NAKAMBA once said no to the Zimbabwe national soccer team’s captaincy citing pressure that comes with the responsibility, ZTN Sport can exclusively reveal.

Warriors manager Wellington Mpandare revealed this when he appeared ZTN’s premier football show The Couch on Wednesday.

“He is not comfortable wearing that thing at all. He was offered at one time and said no,” said Mpandare.

The revelations come at a time when Warriors coach Joey Antipas named Alec Mudimu as captain for the Somalia World Cup qualifier.

But with the return of Knowledge Musona into the team, it will be interesting to see how Antipas creates the hierarchy in the dressing room.

Nakamba on the other hand has since grown from being an ordinary member of the squad to be one of the biggest Zimbabwean football ambassadors in the world.

Former Gunners striker More Moyo, a regular analyst on The Couch, believes Musona should be given back his armband.

“This is obvious. Musona comes back and he gets his armband back. Look, things may not be going on well for him, but he is the man who makes the difference when things get tough for Zimbabwe. If it was my decision I would give Musona back his armband,” Moyo said.

The Couch Football analyst and former Sunday Mail Sports Editor, Makomborero Mutimukulu, thinks Mudimu should keep the armband.

“Knowledge, why are you not the captain in my team? Because form-wise, I don’t trust you. We wan’t someone who takes matters into his own hands when things get tough. For the past matches he has not been doing that… I think Mudimu should be the captain,” said Mutimukulu.

Debate among Warriors fans has been on who should be captain between Musona, Nakamba and Mudimu.

This week Nakamba told Aston Villa that he is excited to make a comeback for his country in the AFCON qualifier against Botswana on November 15 at home.

“The fans really look forward to the National team. I will be very proud to go and represent my country, to give everything and hopefully we will get a positive result,” Nakamba told Aston Villa media.

“We were at the Africa of Nations, of course its football and we didn’t achieve what we wanted to achieve, then now it is time to fight for the qualification again. They are not so easy matches but I think we have a good group of players.”
