Rocks in Eagles test

Rocks versus Eagles, this could be a season decider.

Thanks to Zimbabwe’s government through the Sports and Recreation Commission, sport is back.

Cricket followers could have missed out on some competitive cricket as this season’s Logan Cup campaign is proving to be. The top of the table clash between Rocks and Eagles at Old Hararians could arguably be the ‘Game of the season’.

Rocks, the team from Masvingo, is playing in the Domestic League for the first time in six seasons.

The team that was disbanded due to Zimbabwe Cricket’s financial woes at the time, is back and playing with hunger.
They are unbeaten after dispatching Tuskers and Rhinos to move to 20 points with two rounds of matches left.

However, they face a team with the mettle for such scenarios.

Eagles are unbeaten too, but they have a drawn match against Rhinos, leaving them on 15 points. A win for Rocks could see them open an unassailable lead and clinch their first ever Logan Cup title.

What a story that would be!

And what a story did the Kaia brothers script in Rocks’ previous match.

A hundred and a six-for from Roy Kaia inspired the team to a big win over Rhinos while his younger brother Innocent scored 86 and 99.

Eagles could be a bit rusty since they were on a bye and their last match was before the national lockdown.

Both teams are missing not only players, but also head coaches who were on duty with the national team for the series against Afghanistan last week.

Rocks’ head coach Shepherd Makunura is the Zimbabwe Cricket team’s fielding coach while Eagle’s Stuart Matsikenyeri is the batting coach for the senior men’s team.

Rocks have shown they have good depth after their win over Rhinos, while for Eagles this will be a test without some of their senior players.

Rocks assistant coach Stanley Chioza, who will be in charge of this fixture, said they are focused on staying at the top of the table.

“As Rocks we would like to try and stretch that lead, we know the team that we are playing against, Eagles are perennial campaigners, season campaigners.

“They are experienced players in this format of the game.

“Rocks, coming back first season, we are quite happy with the effort that we are putting so far and being on top of the league, but it’s not a comfortable position, we know that.

“The most important focus for us is to continue doing the good work and hard work we have been putting in,” said Chioza.

His counterpart, Eric Chauluka has expressed confidence in their preparations.

“As Eagles we always take every fixture very seriously, this one is more important.

“We have done well to prepare for this one and we look forward to doing well.

“The guys are ready to go,” he said.

In the other match defending champions Mountaineers take on Rhinos at Harare Sports Club.

The Mountaineers are bottom of the table on five points from two matches, while Rhinos sit on
fourth position with 10 points.
