The extraordinary Troika meeting of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation that was meant to discuss military deployment to thwart Islamic insurgents in Mozambique has been postponed.

The Presidents of Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana were expected to attend the meeting which was scheduled for Thursday.

But the meeting was deferred indefinitely after Chairperson of the organ, who is also Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi, went into quarantine after some members of his team tested positive for Covid-19.

Press Secretary to President Masisi, David Leagajang announced that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa who is the incoming Chairperson of the organ was also unavailable.

Along with President Mnangagwa, the three form the Troika.

Leagajang said on Wednesday, “the leaders agreed on a postponement as a result of the unavailability of the Chairperson His Excellency President Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi currently in quarantine.

He added, “Incoming Chairperson, His Excellency President Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa is appearing at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry”.

Earlier this month a Sadc Double Troika Summit directed “an immediate technical deployment” to deal with the acts of terrorism in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado region.

A technical deployment in military parlance can be defined as “assigning people to serve in various locations, especially soldiers and other military personnel. A deployment may include soldiers as well as equipment and generals”.

Today’s meeting was meant to consider the outcome of the technical deployment and map the way forward.
