72 schools from various rural districts in Zimbabwe have been provided with clean and safe water amid a serious water crisis in the country.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education partnered with the World Food Programme to identify schools in need of assistance.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Taungana Ndoro, appealed for donations to ensure safe water for schools.

“The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is focused on providing safe and clean water in all our schools during this Covid-19 pandemic era and we welcome any donations from partners that would like to ensure that we have got safe water mostly within our rural schools,” he said.

WFP Zimbabwe Programme Policy Officer, Tsungai Chibwe said this is an ongoing initiative since 2016 but more schools still need assistance.

“This is a journey from 2016 and the districts we have supported are Zvishavane in the Midlands. We have supported Mudzi in Mashonaland East, Mbire and Mt Darwin in Mashonaland Central and Binga in Matebeleland North so far. We are of course continuing to mobilize resources to expand the programme further. The need is much greater than those 72 schools but it is important for us to start somewhere and take it forward as and when resources are available,” she said.
