Six Pupils injured as strong winds destroy school

SIX pupils were injured, while several others escaped unhurt when strong winds blew off the roof of a classroom block at a School in Shurugwi, a mining town in Zimbabwe’s Midlands Province.

The pupils at Chironde Secondary School, sustained injuries after roofing
sheets fell into the classroom while they were learning. The injured learners received treatment at a local clinic after the accident on Thursday.

Acting Midlands Provincial Education Director, Reverend Tedious Mativenga confirmed the incident.

“The report that I have indicates that six school pupils were injured in the
process. The pupils were rushed to a nearby clinic where they were treated
and discharged. We have sent a team led by the Shurugwi District Schools Inspector to go on the ground so that they can give us a comprehensive report,” he said.

Shurugwi North Member of the National Assembly Robson Nyathi said, “It’s
unfortunate and we have also sent our people on the ground to try and assist the school. We heard that some of the pupils were injured”.

The incident comes just two weeks after more than ten families were left homeless when their homes were destroyed by heavy storms in Shurugwi.

Authorities in the mining town are working on alleviating the plight of the
displaced families.
